Welcome to Lyric Talk!
About Lyric Talk
Lyric Talk is a site dedicated to providing the community with song lyrics to all your favorite
songs, as well as providing tools for you to intelligently discuss your interpretations of
these songs, and what they mean to you.
Gone are the days where you Google for song lyrics only
to find yourself at a site plagued with endless amounts of advertising and popup windows. Lyric Talk
is dedicated to providing you with a site that you can return to for all your lyrical needs.
It has been forever since I posted a news update, but I certainly have a spot in my heart for this site. If there are some intelligent and thoughtful redditors (or anybody else interested in fostering a thought-provoking community) that are interested in a quality lyrics site, I'd be beyond thrilled to spend some additional time bringing LyricTalk up to date.
Hey all,
I have finally gotten my computer up and running, and configured for development again. I have just finished releasing a bug fix which will now correctly show who the last person to reply to a forum thread is, that came to rise as a result of all of the under-the-hood changes that I have made in the last couple months.
Again to note - one of the most difficult parts of starting up a new web site is getting an audience. I don't have a strong base audience anywhere that I can use to infuse Lyric Talk. I'm open to ideas, links, diggs, referrals, or anything that you guys can do to help me light some community kindling.
So, there hasn't been any big updates on the site in a few weeks. I am currently experiencing some "technical difficulties" with the hard drive at home, so I've got some work to do to get everything back to normal, but hope to have everything working again ASAP.
Maybe in the mean time I can start thinking more into ways to actually drive traffic to the site so that I am not talking to the black hole of the internet. =)
Hey!
The comment system has been upgraded to version 1.12.153.236543.4364235674332 + 1. Or thereabouts.
The new features include:
-- The top 25 highest rated comments are shown by default in the thread. The rest of the comments only show the comment header. Clicking the title link will expand the comment text if it is hidden. Coming soon to a feature near you: being able to set in your preferences how many comments that you want displayed by default in any given comment section.
-- In addition to the top 25 comments in a thread being displayed by default, comments are now sorted by ranking as well, with higher ranking comments getting pushed higher on the page. This means that for any given thread, the highest rated comments at the top level will be ordered first. For any replies that a given comment receives, the replies will then be sorted by rating as well, where the highest rated replies are listed first.
The comment sorting feature, I realize, goes against the grain of the more traditional comment sorting of sites of the internets (which usually only sort in chronological or reverse-chronological order only), but I feel that this change will help provide incentive for users to post quality comments on song lyrics and in forum threads, by rewarding them for doing so. This takes comment quality one step farther than, say, digg or slashdot, by catering to the viewer not only by hiding low-rated comments, but by pushing them down on the page so that you don't have to scroll past them as well.
In addition to being able to set your preference on how many comments you want displayed by default, I should also be adding in a feature soon that allows you to completely hide the reply list to a given comment.
-- More lyrics! That is key here, right?
-- The lighter colored theme is back. Now welcoming UI design expertise!
-- Many artists now have albums listed for them.
-- Lyrics can now belong to a multiple albums of an artist, allowing for full discographies.
-- Lots of backend upgrades. Please report any problems that you (hopefully don't) encounter.
Now I'm back off to trying to getting rid of this nasty flu. =/
As you may or may not have noticed, Lyric Talk has been down for a while (over a year, in fact), but no worries - LT is back for good, and I have lots of improvements in the works! Please feel free to dig around, invite friends, or otherwise help to inspire a new community of music enthusiasts!
As you can all see, Lyric Talk has taken a darker theme to it for the time being. We felt that it works better with the other colors, but not to worry, the light colored theme is not gone for good. After I get theming support implemented, users will be able to select the light-colored theme once again!
I just want to give a quick shout-out to the West Fargo students visiting LT. It's great to have you, so take your time, look around a bit, and stick around a while. While you're busy analyzing song lyrics, feel free to post any suggestions or problems that you might come across. You are all helping to build a new site and get it off the ground, so every thought is considered and appreciated.
Hey all,
I have implemented code that marks forums threads and posts that are unread since your last visit. Ultimately I will give the posts a new CSS style so that they are more quickly identified, but everything in due time, right? In the meantime, let me know if you find any obvious bugs with it, as it has only received limited testing so far!
Well, for all you crazy people that for some reason don't operate on US/EST time zone, you now have the ability to update your time zone preference and daylight savings time setting on your user preferences page.
