God you know, last night I heard someone quantify Nine inch Nails as industripopmetal. I'm wondering why we have so many complicated genres these days, and what happened to jst your basic genres.

it seems to me that, given how many various cross genres we have now, what's the point of having genres at all? I mean, we blurred the lines to the point where everyting floods into everything.

Still, what do you listen to?

Well, I listen to mainly industrial, classical, metal or >> english folk. Hmm. And jazz aparently. I too do not own any country. Unless cotton eye joe counts.

1970's-rock,big band,country
1980's-rap,easy listening,soft rock,hard rock,country
1990's-rap,pop,easy listening,soft rock,hard rock,country
2000+-light rap, hard core rap, techno, dance, funk, grunge, soft rock, hard rock, punck rock, metal, i could go on forever in this era

seems some where in the mid 90's some one got the bright idea to break it down as far as possible.I blame the awards shows.

Music is really broad and changing all the time, and not everything qualifies "strictly" under a particular genre (whatever that means), so I suppose it is probably the purists that make a stink about all those complicated genre's.

I have a huge playlist these days, but I think the primary basepoint is from rock music for me. Still, I try to keep everything on my playlist for variety's sake. Even if I don't listen to it myself personally, I like to have it around in case I have company around that prefers it. In fact, the only genre that I don't really have any music for is country. I suppose I should get on that.

I agree, it is the music purists that really care about the complicated genre's. It is especially hard to classify these days when so many different instruments and technology are used at the same time.

I also have a huge playlist, with "techno" occupying most of it. Like Anth, I also do not have any country. But I don't plan on getting any either :-P
